Lyrics by Tim Rice
Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber
When a celebrity captivated an entire country.
An enduring classic with a recent burst of timeliness, Evita charts Eva Duarte’s unlikely course from poverty to celebrity to political power in midcentury Argentina. The lushly memorable score features powerhouse hits such as “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina” and “Buenos Aires,” and the story is cleverly open to interpretation; whether cautionary or inspirational, Evita reveals in bright spotlights how a celebrity can capture the imagination of an entire country.

Director’s Note

Costume Note
In this production, the company of Evita represents the descamisados, the working class, as they tell the story of Eva Perón’s life. Anyone remembered in the collective consciousness, such as Eva, Perón, or the military, change clothes as time progresses, while the individuals remembering her remain in one outfit that they remember themselves wearing at some time during her story, so outfits on stage range from the fashion of 1934 to 1952. The show is done in the colors of the Argentina flag, and the outfits Eva wears are inspired by photographs from her time in the public eye. Che narrates the story and challenges the unwavering support of Evita with the ultimate concern for the general public. He is costumed in a jacket painted in the style of fileteado porteño, a hand lettering technique popular in Buenos Aires, with the saying “el Pueblo unido jamás será vencido” (the people united can never be defeated). This saying originated in Chile in the 1970s, and has remained a popular protest phrase. This phrase was chosen for its alignment with the values of the character, and while its origin occurred after the time period of the show, it was popularized in the years Evita was being written.
While the story heavily focuses on Eva’s life, her rise to power was made possible by the descamisados. It was important to me that the company’s design evokes a highly individual yet cohesive ensemble representing the general public of Argentina during this time. I hope the costumes help to bring the story to life!
