The Playwriting Lab is a weekly creative space for playwrights to write, experiment, and develop new work for the stage.
Writers are invited to bring works-in-progress, from a single scene or ten-minute play to a full-length script, or to come ready to begin something new. Each week offers opportunities to share pages, hear work read aloud, receive thoughtful feedback, and continue developing your writing in a supportive community of fellow playwrights.
Weekly writing prompts and exercises will also invite writers to generate new material and keep the creative process going.
Each Week May Include:
Writing Prompts: Fresh prompts and exercises designed to generate new material and encourage experimentation.
Workshopping: Bring pages from your current project to share and develop with the group.
Table Reads: Hear your words spoken aloud and discover what changes when a script moves from the page into the room.
Feedback & Discussion: Receive thoughtful responses from fellow writers.
Craft Exploration: Conversations around character, dialogue, structure, conflict, theatricality, and the questions that emerge from the work in the room.
Creative Community: A consistent place to show up, write, take risks, and be in conversation with other playwrights.
The Lab will culminate in a live Playwrights Showcase featuring work developed throughout the session. Writers will have the opportunity to select a short play, scene, or excerpt to be read by actors in front of an audience, bringing the work off the page and into the room.
TIMES: The course will take place on Sundays from 10:00 to 11:30am from Oct 4 - Dec 6, with Oct 25 and Nov 22 off.
EXPERIENCE: Open to all skill levels.
REFUND POLICY: Class tuition will be refunded in full up to 7 days prior to the class start date. Refunds will not be granted after the deadline.
ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTOR: Cathrine Goldstein is a many-time award-winning playwright, bestselling author, and theatre educator with over thirty years of professional experience. A graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Manhattan, she holds a master’s degree in Theatre History and is a member of the Dramatists Guild.
Cathrine has extensive credits as a playwright, director, producer, and acting instructor, and has written and implemented acting curricula for students of all ages. She has held leadership roles in theatre development, outreach, and family programming, and has taught across school, studio, and professional settings. She lives in the Lake Norman area with her husband, two daughters, and two old rescue beagles—one mostly toothless.
